Michela O'Connor Abrams

Michela O’Connor Abrams is President of Dwell Media, the award-winning media company founded in 2000 by Lara Deam. Michela’s ten years of leadership at Dwell has led to General Excellence at the National Magazine Awards, finalist in the corporate category for the prestigious National Design Awards, and National recognition for both circulation growth and newsstand sales. In 2005, she conceived and launched Dwell on Design, the largest design show in the U.S. hosting 25,000+ design professionals and enthusiasts in 2012. She has led the development and growth of Dwell Media’s digital platforms including web, mobile, and tablet products which were recently recognized as “1 Most Innovative” in Affinity Research’s August 2011 survey.
 
Michela was honored with EWIP’s prestigious 2012 “Exceptional Woman in Publishing Award” bestowed upon women leading and innovating in media. In 2005 Michela was honored by Media Industry News as their “Sales Leader of the Year.” In 2011 she was an honored Alumni of the Year by her alma mater Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for the School of Liberal Arts.

terry arth picTerry is Vice President of Member Programs for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. He has been with the organization since 1991 serving in various capacities within the Member Programs and Services Department. His current responsibilities include the overall coordination, logistics and financial obligations of the various meetings and conferences that take place throughout the year.
 
Terry is an active member of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), and the Institute for Organization Management (IOM).
 
 
 
 

Derek Gaskins

Chief Customer Engagement Officer, Rutter's Farm Stores

derek gaskins picDerek joined Rutter's Farm Stores in 2013. Prior to that, he worked at the Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores team as Senior Vice President of Marketing & Merchandising in  2011. He has more than 15 years of retail experience in the fuel, convenience, and grocery industries. Previously, Derek was Vice President of Marketing for NACS, and still serves on the Marketing and Communications Committee. Prior to NACS, he directed the marketing for Giant Eagle supermarkets and GetGo convenience stores.  His other prior experiences include brand management with Procter & Gamble, sales with Nabisco/Kraft, and fixed income and equity trading with Goldman Sachs.  Derek has his MBA from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa.

 

Jack Goldman

President & CEO, Hearth, Patio, & Barbecue Association

Jack Goldman has been President & CEO of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) since June 2006.  Prior to assuming the role of President, Jack served as HPBA's General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs for almost six years.  Jack joined HPBA in September of 2000 after spending ten years at two private law firms, specializing in environmental and patent law.  Prior to that, he managed the Aluminum Association's environmental program for almost ten years.  He holds a law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and a Ph.D. in Environmental Biology from Ohio State University.

The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, based in Arlington, Virginia, is the North American industry association for manufacturers, retailers, distributors, representatives, service firms, and allied associates for all types of hearth, barbecue, and patio appliances, fuels, and accessories. The association provides professional member services and industry support in education, statistics, government relations, marketing, advertising, and consumer education. There are more than 2,300 members in the HPBA.

 

Wilma M. Grant

Publishing & Web Manager - Office of Information Technology, Supreme Court of the United States

wilma grant picWilma has 32 years of service within the Judicial Branch of government. She currently is the Publishing and Web Manager at the Supreme Court of the United States, handling all in-plant printing needs for the Court and its staff. Wilma also manages in-house data conversions in XML and PDF for documents posted to multiple websites and for uploading by major publishing houses, other government agencies, educational institutions, and national news sources.

She has held leadership positions in the Association of Reporters of Judicial Decisions, Xplor International and Cosmopolitan Associates and is an active member of the Defense Intelligence Roundtable.  Wilma received the Naomi Berber Award from the Printing Industries of America – the only Federal Government Publishing Manager to receive this honor.  Other honors include Woman of Distinction in the Hi-Volume Printing Industry and the Superior Performance Award.

 

Wayne H. Jacobs

CEO & Director of Research, Jacobs Jenner & Kent

Wayne Jacobs PhotoWayne leads an international marketing and marketing research company in the exhibition industry. He is a much-published author of research and international marketing studies with more than 25 years of experience in the design, data collection, analysis and presentation of qualitative and quantitative market research. He has conducted "state-of-the-industry" studies for clients such as Exhibition and Convention Executives Forum (ECEF) and the Consumer Electronics, Business Products, Manufacturing Technology, and Residential/Commercial Building Industries.

Wayne is the author of the internationally-recognized annual "State of the Trade Show Industry Report - AttendTrend®." He also moderates approximately 200 focus groups per year and teaches classes on the use and practice of qualitative research. He is a market research advisor to the American Red Cross, and a member of the American Marketing Association, International Association of Exhibition and Events, and Marketing Research Association.
 

Sam Lippman

President and Founder, Lippman Connects

Sam LippmanSam provides executive level consulting in strategic planning, marketing and management to the convention and exhibition industry. He is also a skilled facilitator for customer advisory groups and boards of director. Before launching his company, he was Vice President of the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC), producing megashows such as PRINT and GRAPH EXPO, as well as regional shows. Before GASC, he was Group Vice President of the Consumer Electronics Shows, managing CES winter and summer, and creating new shows such as High End Audio and CES Mexico. His first show management job was with the National Computer Conference from 1980 to 1984. He started his career with United Exposition Service Company (now GES), producing shows in Chicago, Detroit and New York City.

Sam was presented an IAEE merit award for his contributions to education for the convention and exhibition industry. He is an international speaker, author and teacher, and is often quoted by the media. He earned his facilitator certificate from the A.C.Nielsen Burke Institute and is an adjunct lecturer on marketing and producing exhibitions at George Washington University. He is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara.
 

Cal Newport

Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Georgetown University

calnewportCal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University and a writer who tackles issues relevant to his young generation. He's the author of four books. His latest, So Good They Can't Ignore You which critiques the common advice to "follow your passion," was selected as one of the best business books of the year by Inc. Magazine, The Globe & Mail, and 800-CEO-READ. His ideas and writing have been featured on TV, radio, and many print publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.

 

 

Margaret Pederson

mpederson picMargaret is leads a consulting firm focused on exhibitions and conferences, technology and manufacturing; clients include public companies, private firms, private equity, associations and international governments.
 
She is a member of the Board of Directors of Viad  (NYSE VVI), the parent organization of GES and has extensive exhibition experience.  Prior professional work includes being President of Penton Exhibitions, President of Primedia Exhibitions, President of Prism Exhibitions and Senior Vice President of Reed Exhibition Companies. 
 
Margaret was Chairman and a Board Member of IAEE in 2008-2009.  Pederson served on the Board of Directors for SISO and was chair in 2004-2005 . She has served on the Board of Trustees for the IAEM Foundation, the Strategic Planning Committee for IAEM, Chairman of the Nominating Committee for IAEM and the Consumer Show Group for IAEM.   She speaks at several exhibition and conference industry events and has taught marketing, strategy and the role of exhibitions at NYU, Baruch, Yeshiva University, Fairfield University and other schools. Pederson was recognized as one of "The 100 Most Influential People in the Tradeshow Business" and one of the "25 Women to Know."
 
Margaret has a Master’s of Business Administration from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and attended The London School of Economics as part of their Honors Program in International Law and Business.  Her undergraduate degree is from the Honors Program at the University of Virginia.
 
 

Brian Perkins

Partner, FirstSource Events

brian perkins picDishwasher, grave digger, lab technician, dairy herdsman, long shoreman, truck driver, commercial fisherman; Brian has caught, cut, and salted fish, raked blueberries, made Christmas wreaths, picked crabmeat, shucked scallops, hauled lobster traps, pounded nails, written stories, taken photographs, and run a small-town government.
 
At 59 he is not quite twice as old as the number of jobs he’s held. 
 
For the last 20 (plus) years Brian has been involved with the trade show industry as an exhibitor, show organizer, and supplier to the industry. He has organized trade shows large and small in the US, Europe and Asia. He has launched numerous events on three continents with varying degrees of success. Currently Brian is one of the founding partners of FirstSource Events an independent B2B event organizer with a primary focus on developing stand-alone hosted buyer events.
 
 

Jim Pittas

pittas picJim has over 20 years of experience in the trade show industry and joined PMMI over 13 years ago and is responsible for all aspects of the shows including sales, promotion and operations.  Since joining PMMI, he has lead the association in a number of new endeavors, most notably PMMI becoming its own General Service Contractor in 2004. 
 
At over 1.1 million net square feet and 1,900 exhibiting companies, PACK EXPO International has traditionally ranked in the top 4 shows in the United States.  PACK EXPO Las Vegas has experience incredible growth since its debut in 1995.  This biennial event has grown to over 650,000 net square feet with 1,600 exhibiting companies and has been on the Fastest 50 list for several years.  More recently, Jim and PMMI expanded its reach in Mexico with the launch of a new show EXPO PACK Guadalajara in 2013 and just announced its new venture PACK EXPO East which will debut in Philadelphia debuting in February 2015.
 
 

Gary Rosenthal

gary rosenthal picGary has more than 25 years of production and large project management experience  integrating traditional video methods with emerging computer-based technologies for clients in entertainment, education, marketing, legal, medical, and research. His background as a broadcast and on-air promotions producer for Nickelodeon and MTV helped hone his skills developing content that speaks to young people. Gary has also developed print media as part of programs to cross-market characters and concepts along with web, video, video gaming and other emerging media venues.

Gary’s technical skills and security clearance have led to work as a consultant, trainer and project manager for Army Television, Army Corps of Engineers, The Department of Defense, Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Gary taught at George Washington University and has been a featured speaker at numerous industry events.

From 1993 through 2010, Hal served the Materials Handing Industry as Executive Vice President directing strategic planning, business development, membership, and exhibitions.
 
From 1971 until 1993, Hal served Fortune 100 capital goods producers in marketing, strategic planning, manufacturing, and general management in the material handling and the non-residential construction industries. 
 
He is a member of the National Association of Business Economists (NABE), the International Association of Exhibitions & Events (IAEE), and the American Society for Association Executives (ASAE) and serves on the Board of the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) and the Federal Reserve Board Industry Roundtable (Richmond Division).
